Jason Marsh (Acesis, Inc.) is a violinist with a day job as an Information Architect/Designer for medical software. He played professionally through college but landed at Apple Computer and has been in the computer industry ever since. Jason has built a unique violin-centric style using a computer and foot pedals to create multi-channel live improvised orchestrations in real-time. He sees a close relationship between music creation and the design of complex problem-solving software.

Olin Reams (ConceptDraw) is a technology sales and marketing professional with experience building market presence and success for emerging companies. He has driven strong and sustainable revenue growth in both domestic and international markets, and is an experienced professional well-versed in high-growth technology solution selling, channel development, federal government sales, team recruitment, coaching, building high-performance sales teams and sales & marketing strategy.

Seth Resler, Internet radio host and founder of The Polylogue, and a diverse panel of in

novators and activists disucss the current state of innovation in American politics.

From the Republican Presidential Primary to the Occupy Wallstreet Movement, what are the game changing insights being applied to elections, government, political protest and what is their impact on innovation in the US?

Panelists:

Dr. Nicole Velasco – Currently an Assistant Professor of International Relations and Research Methods at Lee University, Velasco is a Stanford trained Political Economist who specializes in public finance; Velasco’s research focuses on democratization and its relationship with interest group politics and power dynamics in legislative bodies.

Dr. Thomas J. Buckholtz – Volunteered in national, regional, and local roles of a successful Presidential campaign. Served in the subsequent administration of President George H.W. Bush, and later made a suggestion that led to perhaps the first US nationwide grassroots movement catalyzed by a political party’s National Committee. He brings perspective from innovations in business, government, technology, marketplace business practices, natural-resources conservation, and societal development.

Josh Abend – Trained as an architect, turned industrial designer and corporate innovation pioneer. A colleague of the original CEF, Creative Education Foundation. He has been a VP of product design for 5 divisions of a Fortune 500 company and also headed SRI’s Innovation Management Center. His current focus is on establishing professional requirements for the CIA “Corporate Innovation Architect” or Officer via his INNOVATION MASTERS® LLC program.

Peter Allen – Has worked as a Political organizer and communications strategist from the trenches of the 2008 Democratic Primary to heated battles for the City Council and County Board of Supervisors. He has spent the past few years developing a rich understanding of online social media tools and how they can be used to empower and mobilize people on behalf of a candidate, a cause, or a brand.

John Miedema and Howard Sprouse present an overview of their quest to create organic “waste” management facilities yield the highest use for their inputs. Biochar was a big topic for the evening. It catalyzed a multi-disciplinary discussion that spanned topics such as agriculture, forestry and remediation.

The integration of biochar production with biogas facilities was explored in context of the anaerobic digester being proposed to replace the current incinerator run by the City of Palo Alto.

The methane producing bacteria living inside anaerobic digesters do break down a lot organic material, but not cellulose (the compound that makes up the cell walls of plants) Yet cellulose is the ideal feedstock for making biochar via pyrolysis. The integration of biochar production with AD facilities holds the promise of producing a rich, dark, carbon sequestering soil amendment, full of nutrients from the digestate and structurally enhanced by the highly porous biochar.

John Miedema is an internationally recognized expert on biochar systems. As founder of the Pacific Northwest Biochar Initiative (PNW Biochar), John has been taking a leadership role in biochar advocacy and research. He is the Director of Biomass Energy for Thompson Timber and Starker Forests in Corvallis, Oregon where John operates an integrated pyrolysis and gasification facility that produces biochar.

Howards Sprouse is an expert in the remediation industry. He has served as a consultant to Battelle’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory assisting with their efforts at developing mycoremediation technology, (the use of fungi to clean a variety of organic contaminants.)

He is the founder of The Remediators Incorporated, an environmental service company specializing mycoremediation and other biological remediation systems.

John and Howard are a founding members of the Oregon Biochar Corp, who’s focus is integrating biochar production into biogas plants and composting systems.

Dr. James Caldwell shares his experience working with sustainability planners in China to develop actionable strategies for creating Eco Cities. Topics include the need to measure the actual performance of buildings, international joint ventures, livability and scalability. Chinese eco-cities covered include Suzhou, Tianjin and Nansha.

This event was a collaboration between Sustainovation and Silicon Valley Innovation Institute (SVII).

SVII and CAST Labs joined forces for an end of the year celebration. The program featured live jazz, opera arias, a tango dance performance, and a dinner-debate. The theme of the evening – art, creativity and innovation, a collaborative exploration.

A multi-talented panel of accomplished left-and-right-brainers lead a panel discussion moderated by CAST Labs founder Sylvie Leotin. A wide range of opinions, talents and personality made for a stimulating discussion that involved the whole room. Here are some images and videos of the event:
